Chinese holistic processing: Evidence from cognitive mental architecture using systems factorial technology

Previous research has presented conflicting evidence regarding whether Chinese characters are processed holistically. In past work, we applied Systems Factorial Technology (SFT) and discovered that native speakers exhibited limited capacity when processing words. To pinpoint the source of this limitation, our current delved further into mental architecture involved in English words, taking consideration information from each component. study, participants were directed to make same/different judgments on characters/words sequentially. Our results indicated utilized a parallel self-terminating strategy both or neither left/right components differed (Experiment 1). Faced with decisional uncertainty either component would also differ, most exhaustive architecture, while few coactive 2). Taken together, work provides word/character perception, there is weak holistic (parallel processing) partial sufficient for decision; robust (coactive occurs under uncertainty. findings underscore significant role task presentation context play visual word processing.
